This massive traffic accident happened on Route 44 in Avon, CT in July of
2005. I was on my way to work, and i passed through that intersection
every day to get there, but i was lucky enough to miss the accident
by 10 minutes.
Route 44 in Avon is arguably the most dangerous road in Connecticut,
it is known for it's multitude of serious accidents, but this
one was the worst in years. 20 cars were involved, 4 people were
killed, and 19 were injured when a dump truck lost its brakes
going down the mountain and hit a bunch of cars and a bus that
were sitting on the opposite side of the intersection, waiting
to turn left and waiting to go straight, up the mountain. The dump truck was going upwards of 75mph when it hit, turning on
its side after impact, crushing several of the cars. This accident
closed down 44 for almost 24 hours, and this story made national
news. The only advice i would give is to avoid driving on that
road at all costs, there have been 2 accidents on the same mountain
since then, one of them just last week, and that one was fatal
too.
