While traveling in Washinton State at the end of July 2006, I was headed into Seattle on Route 5 South when I ran into a sustained traffic backup. The cause was rubber necking- a slowdown of traffic caused by people observing a multi car accident on 5 north- the other side of the highway. It was a three or four car pileup replete with ambulances, tow trucks and serious damage- worthy of an extended glance.
I did my part to further delay traffic and snapped these two photos while I slowed and rolled by. When I returned to my hotel and looked at the photos I was annoyed that my picture of the main crash (due to digital camera delay) was blocked by Volkswagon traveling through the one open lane on the side of the road where the accident occurred- However the image shows rubbernecking in action --observe the two craned heads inside.
